Stop Frame Animation

27 Jun

The students at SHS have been busy the last two weeks of school. The students in Mrs. Chau’s Ceramics 002, 004, and 006 classes have been preparing for finals and putting their finishing touches on their final ceramics pieces. These students also created, filmed and edited their own stop frame animation movies! The students worked together to create these films using various mediums to create  their stop frame animation movies. For many students this was the first time they had used iMovie for editing as well as creating a stop frame animation movie.

Take a look at the movies the students created:

New SHS Media Lab Posters

3 Jun

Students in the Graphic Arts and Visual Communications program at SHS designed new posters for the new Media Lab located in the Somerville High School Library. The students in this program can earn college credits and obtain professional licensure in Adobe.

They did the majority of the work I simply made the video. Thanks again to these wonderful students for their creativity, time and for hanging up the posters for everyone to see!

Artfully Incepted 2.0. A collaboration between Art and Music classes at SHS

22 May

During the first semester (2012) of Ms. Mosby’s Introduction to Piano class, students decided to tackle the recreation of the musical piece entitled “Time,” by Hans Zimmer which appeared during the closing scenes of the movie Inception.  At the same time, the students in Mrs. Contos Art class were studying the famous artist, Wassily Kandinsky. This artist painted various paintings that were all inspired by music, bright colors and various line forms.

The two teachers collaborated to create a project where the students could experience what Kandinsky meant when he expressed in his paintings and writings; the belief that painting could be a form of visual music.  Piano students listen to, analyzed and wrote out the instrumental parts composed by Zimmer then recorded their version using the instrumental sounds available to them on the class keyboards, while the Art students created works of art inspired by the music.

This video was created to showcase the combined artwork and musical performance of the students.

If you’re interested in finding out more about Wassily Kandinsky, his paintings and his love of music here are a couple of youtube videos that might interest you:

If you’re interested in listening to other works of Hans Zimmer here are a few youtube videos that might spark your interest: (side note: Zimmer has composed music for over 100 films including, The Lion King, Gladiator and Inception)

New Media Lab Coordinator

16 May

I just wanted to take a quick moment to introduce myself to you all.

Most of the time the beach is where I love to be!

I am the new media lab coordinator here at Somerville High School. I will be replacing Ms. Jarboe. My name is Claribel Aguilar Whyte (Whew! That’s a mouthful) so for short you can just call me Ms. Aguilar. I am a native Bostonian but have traveled many places and if you ever met me you’ll be able to tell by my “accent”. I attended Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, AL home of the Marching Southerners and the mighty Gamecocks (gamecocks is just a fancy word for a fighting rooster). I’ll include a link just in case you want to check out the University. I majored in Elementary & Special Education but I took a huge liking into the technology world and it’s usage in the classroom which lead me to be a part of the Somerville High School staff. I am totally excited about being here and being a part of such a wonderful school family!

In case you didn’t know where the media lab is, it is located in the library! There are Mac computers as well as Windows PC here for all your creative needs.

Look forward to seeing you!
